Motor Replacement Thermal Protection Safety Tips:
- Motors with automatic reset thermal protection must not be used where automatic or unexpected motor startup can be hazardous. Applications where automatic restarting can be dangerous include: conveyors, compressors, tools, farm equipment, and certain fans and blowers.
- Motors that automatically start and are out of view must be protected against overheating and overloading with a separate overcurrent device, such as a motor starter, or a thermally or impedance protected motor.
- Fan motors that are built into or within a building structure and are out of sight (unattended and/or located where you may not know the motor locked up) must have either a manual reset thermal protector or a thermal cut-off device. Examples include bathroom exhaust fans, attic exhaust fans, wall and ceiling insert fans, and duct fans. Range hoods, pedestal fans, circulating fans, and suspended ceiling fans do not require a manual reset or switch.
