These openings allow air to enter the motor so that it doesn’t overheat, but the motor is not completely guarded from water and materials getting in. ODP motors are can stand some water dripping on them, but use them in relatively clean, indoor locations, and not exposed outside! This Leeson AC motor comes with a built-in overload, which helps protect the equipment from overheating. Thermal overloads are designed to open the start circuit and cut power to the motor in the case that the motor begins overheating from drawing too much current for too long a period of time.
